Integrated Catalytic Conversion of γ-Valerolactone to Liquid Alkenes for Transportation Fuels

Abstract: Efficient synthesis of renewable fuels remains a challenging and important line of research. We report a strategy by which aqueous solutions of gamma-valerolactone (GVL), produced from biomass-derived carbohydrates, can be converted to liquid alkenes in the molecular weight range appropriate for transportation fuels by an integrated catalytic system that does not require an external source of hydrogen. The GVL feed undergoes decarboxylation at elevated pressures (e.g., 36 bar) over a silica/alumina catalyst to… Show more

“…The results obtained in the hydrogenation of 2-cyclohexen-1-one (I) spurred us to investigate the activity of this new catalytic system in the hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) (V) as the design of novel and ecofriendly catalysts, at low cost, for the efficient transformation of natural resources or biomass-derived platform chemicals is a very promising approach [27][28][29]. Lignocellulose is a potential sustainable and renewable organic carbon source and in particular FAL is a promising building block for fuels and chemicals.…”

“…14,15 As the product of the simultaneous hydrogenation of the carbonyl and carboxyl groups in levulinic acid, 1,4-pentanediol can be used as a potential monomer for the production of polyesters. 4,16 However, due to the preferable intermolecular esterification, most 40 of research about the hydrogenation of levulinic acid were focused on its conversion to γ-valerolactone (GVL) 16,17 which can be used as fuel additive or feedstock for the bio-jet fuels 18 .…”

“…Duas publicações recentes por Bond et al 110 e Lange et al 111 sugerem que o ácido levulínico derivado por desidratação de glicose pode ser intermediário em processos de conversão catalítica para gerar ésteres do ácido valérico. 112 A transformação da γ-valerolactona na presença de Pb/Nb 2 O 6 gera como intermediários alquenos que sofrem posterior oligomerização para formar alcanos C 9 -C 16 com potencial de serem empregados como combustíveis líquidos tipo diesel.…”
