Integrated crop-livestock farming system for sustainable agricultural production in Nigeria

Abstract: Integrated crop-livestock is advocated to be very promising in boosting food productivity and soil fertility in Nigeria owing to its numerous synergistic benefits as outlined in this review. Particularly, the system will be very suitable in the savannah regions of the country where livestock production is predominant. Although integrated crop-livestock farming has been in existence in these regions, it is typically cereal based-livestock system resulting in perennial depletion of soil fertility. “…Wahyuni (2015) argued that integrated agriculture is an alternative effort in order to improve the efficiency of cattle business in farmland. Furthermore, the Farming System Integration is an alternative to climate change mitigation (Munandar et al, 2015), and is often recommended as one of the most promoted solutions in terms of decreasing soil fertility and the loss in intensification system productivity (Ezeaku et al, 2015). Swarnam et al (2014) suggests an integrated approach to farming systems leads to improved household nutrition, income and employment creation.…”

“…An interesting direction for our future research will be to focus on the adoption of the integrated croplivestock farming system by Niger's farmers which is also advocated, along with improved crops, to be promising in boosting food productivity in sub-Saharan developing countries (Ezeaku et al, 2015).…”

“…Furthermore, the integrated farming system is an alternative to climate change mitigation [28] . Integration of livestock and crops is often recommended as one of the most promoted solutions related to occurrence of soil fertility decline and a loss in intensification system productivity [29] . Integrated farming system approach as an effort made by pressing production cost, especially on the provision of land for forage, cattle as a source of labor, and can contribute in suppressing the purchase of fertilizer.…”
