Integrated resource efficiency: measurement and management

Abstract: Purpose Drawing on the systems theory and the natural resource-based view, the purpose of this paper is to advance an integrated resource efficiency view (IREV) and derive a composite “integrated resource efficiency index” (IRE-index) for assessing the environmental, economic, and social resource efficiencies of production economies. Design/methodology/approach Using sub-national input-output data, the IRE-index builds on the human development index (HDI) and the OECD green growth indicators by including fun… Show more

“…Operations processes are reliant upon use of energy, either directly as a resource to produce output (such as operating machines) or indirectly to support facilities (for example, by heating, ventilation, and lighting) [29]. Therefore, energy efficiency as a unit of resource consumption and cost of operational processes [30,31] connects directly to both economic and environmental sustainability performance.…”

“…However there have been mixed responses to the HDI (Sagar and Najam, 1998; Neumayer, 2001; Hezri and Dovers, 2006; Bravo, 2014), particularly as a true alternative to using income measures such as GDP as a measure of a country's progress due to the lack of consideration of environmental sustainability measures (Sagar and Najam, 1998; Neumayer, 2001). It is possible to incorporate sustainability components by modifying the composition of the HDI by adding freely available data such as carbon emissions (Bravo, 2014) or material efficiency (Koh et al., 2016).…”
