Integrated Spectrum Sensing and Frequency Reconfigurable Antennas for Inter-Weave Cognitive-Radio Applications

Abstract: A dual-port antenna configuration composed of an ultra-wideband (UWB) sensing antenna and a dual-band reconfigurable communicating antenna is proposed and studied in this paper. The sensing antenna is an elliptical disk radiator covers a frequency range of (1.8-11) GHz. The communicating antenna is a modified dual-band rectangular radiator. By controlling the length of a stub attached to the communicating antenna with the aid of two PIN-diodes, the dual-band antenna can reconfigure its resonant frequencies to … Show more

“…Various frequency reconfiguration techniques are used in satellite communications to optimize performance, increase measurement accuracy, and ensure reliable communication under different conditions. Frequency reconfiguration algorithms used in satellite communications include dynamic spectrum access (DSA) [53], cognitive radio-based frequency reconfiguration [54], frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) [55], adaptive beamforming and frequency steering [56], and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) [57]. DSA algorithms allow satellites to adjust their frequency utilization dynamically depending on the availability of spectra in their operational environment.…”

“…A combination of dual-band and UWB antennae is utilized as communicating and sensing antennae for CR applications, respectively. The reconfiguration is accomplished using two PIN diodes connected at the communicating antenna [ 22 ]. Two PIN diodes are embedded in the UWB antenna to achieve band-notched behavior at the operating frequencies of WiMAX, WLAN, and ITU [ 23 ].…”

“…In [ 22 ] reconfigurable narrow band micro strip antenna with a UWB dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) cover a bandwidth from 3–11 GHz and omnidirectional pattern provides 30 dB gain variation and 80% efficiency. A rectangular microstrip antenna with a spanner-shaped feeding line [ 23 ], printed hexagonal antenna [ 24 ] and elliptical mono-pole antenna [ 25 ] is presented for wireless application, cognitive radio application, and detection application respectively. The mono-pole antenna used in [ 26 ] is operational from 2.8–10.6 GHz achieved a gain variation of 60 dB.…”
