Integrated Surveys of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Southern Sudan: How Much Do They Cost and Can They Be Refined?

Abstract: BackgroundIncreasing emphasis on integrated control of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) requires identification of co-endemic areas. Integrated surveys for lymphatic filariasis (LF), schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection have been recommended for this purpose. Integrated survey designs inevitably involve balancing the costs of surveys against accuracy of classifying areas for treatment, so-called implementation units (IUs). This requires an understanding of the main cost drivers and o… Show more

“…Discussions concerning the cost of various tests often centered around the costs of supplies; however, results shown here and elsewhere 28,29 suggest that in addition to supplies, personnel and transportation need to be recognized and accounted for in the budgeting process, as they are important cost drivers. Although supply costs may be more or less stable across African settings, 28 costs associated with personnel may vary considerably.…”

“…Collection of data for mapping of podoconiosis will improve understanding of the spatial distribution of podoconiosis and ecological factors determining this distribution. Experiences from Uganda [79,87], Togo [88] and South Sudan [89] indicate the possibility of integrated disease mapping [90]. Togo and South Sudan conducted integrated mapping of STH, LF, trachoma, schistosomiasis, and onchocerciasis.…”

“…Surveys to identify the mean prevalence of schistosomiasis and thereby, determine which treatment strategy to use can be costly and add substantially to the total cost of treatment programs. [14][15][16][17] The focal nature of the infection adds to the complexity of a sampling scheme to develop a two-tier treatment approach. There have been different approaches to such stratification outside of sub-Saharan Africa.…”
