Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analysis reveals antioxidant machinery in grapevine exposed to salt and alkali stress

Abstract: Plant acclimation to salt and alkali stress is closely linked to the ability of the antioxidant system to mediate the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we investigated the effects of salt stress and alkali stress on ROS, antioxidant enzymes, transcriptome, and metabolome. The results showed that the levels of superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and electrolyte leakage increased under salt and alkali stress, with higher concentrations observed under alkali stress tha… Show more

“…The results of the germination test under different stress conditions showed a similar tendency where the BLK seeds were more resistant than the YL seeds. Salt and alkali stress flavonoids induced a dramatic increase in total flavonoids, which in turn helps to scavenge the ROS in the grapevines . In our study, salt and alkaline treatments seemed not to induce sufficient flavonoids to overcome the gap between BLK and YL seeds, further hinting that the flavonoids preaccumulated in the seeds play a predominate role in stress tolerance during germination.…”

Considering the importance of flavonoids as food supplement and stress tolerance, the BLK plants could probably be a genetic resource for achieving dual goals in both seed quality and seed resilience.…”

“…The samples used in qRT‐PCR analysis are the same as the sequencing samples, and the reaction system and degree are carried out following the instructions of the Biomarker 2 × SYBR Green Fast qPCR Mix fluorescence quantitative kit. The relative expression of each unigene was assessed using the 2 −ΔΔCt method (Lu et al, 2023).…”
