Integrated transmission & distribution system modeling and analysis: Need & advantages

Abstract: The primary objective of this paper is to highlight the need for and benefits of studying the steady state and dynamic response of power systems using three phase integrated transmission and distribution (T&D) system models (hereafter referred to as hybrid models). Modeling and simulation requirements for building and analyzing hybrid models are also discussed. Finally, results from steady state and dynamic simulations of a large hybrid model are presented to demonstrate insights that can be obtained from hybr… Show more

“…A term “TSO‐DSO coordination” has been under extensive research, as fast growing power network changes are creating above‐mentioned challenges and causing least‐cost operation more challenging to attain. This can be resolved by substantial coordination framework between transmission and distribution network . Therefore, TSO‐DSO coordination is inevitable and TSO and DSO rules for sharing power needs to be reviewed as per system requirements …”

“…This can be resolved by substantial coordination framework between transmission and distribution network. 1 Therefore, TSO-DSO coordination is inevitable and TSO and DSO rules for sharing power needs to be reviewed as per system requirements. 2 While DGs incorporation is increasing progressively, the coordination between transmission and distribution system should be improved for effective utilization of resources.…”

“…Traditional “passive” distribution grids are being converted into active distribution grids (ADGs), which can participate in power grid scheduling actively. It is time that the separate approach for planning and operating power systems be revisited …”

“…Therefore, it has become evident that distribution networks, and all its components, can no longer be neglected from studies assessing power systems and its dynamic behavior (Jain et al, 2016). In order to address these issues, many tools and strategies have been proposed in the last years in order to perform the analysis of joint power transmission and distribution (T&D) systems.…”
