Integrating 4 Measures to Evaluate Physical Function in Patients with Cancer (In4M): Protocol for a prospective study

Abstract: Introduction Accurate, patient-centered evaluation of physical function in patients with cancer can provide important information on the functional impacts experienced by patients both from the disease and its treatment. Increasingly, digital health technology is facilitating and providing new ways to measure symptoms and function. There is a need to characterize the longitudinal measurement characteristics of physical function assessments, including clinician reported physical function (ClinRo), patient-repor… Show more

“…56 Usable 6MWT and CPET data were obtained in 68% of patients undergoing chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplant; in contrast, 84% had usable data from the wrist-worn DHT and 73% had usable data from both the wrist-worn DHT and ePROs. Finally, in the upcoming "In4m" feasibility and usability study, Thanarajasingam et al propose a multi-domain data collection protocol among 200 patients with breast cancer or lymphoma undergoing chemotherapy 14 (pre-print only). Data capture will be enabled by an online platform designed to consolidate data from electronic health records (including study-specific in-clinic 6MWT and ECOG data), weekly ePROs (several instruments focused on physical activity), and a wrist-worn wearable (to estimate outcomes reflecting steps/distance walked, heart rate, and activity levels).…”

“…Despite their widespread use, COAs suffer from several important limitations, including a lack of sufficient granularity to interrogate specific aspects of health, 14 raters' variability, 9 and creating redundant data sets with significant burden for patients if multiple questionnaires are deployed. 15 PerfO assessment is usually performed during in‐clinic visits, which limits the frequency of data collection and can be highly dependent on patient motivation 16 ; in addition, although PerfOs are often described as being objective, many rely on human scoring resulting in challenges with inter‐rater variability.…”
