Integrating a Web-Based Whole-Slide Imaging System and Online Questionnaires in a National Cytopathology Peer Comparison Educational Program in Taiwan

Abstract: Objective: In a peer comparison educational program, transferring glass slides between laboratories and collecting responses are time- and cost-consuming. Integrating a web-based whole-slide imaging (WSI) system and online questionnaires may serve as a promising solution. Study Design: Five gynecologic Papanicolaou-stained smears and 5 nongynecologic slides were selected. The 10 whole-slide images were acquired by a Leica SCN-400 system and released via an Aperio eSlide Manager. Online questionnaires generated… Show more

“…Our department implemented virtual microanatomy applications for medical students for about 2 months during the lockdown using "Leica Acquire, version 3.4.6" (Leica Microsystems, Switzerland). Its use as a virtual classroom for pathological anatomy activities was demonstrated previously (Attardi et al, 2018;Hang et al, 2015). This platform now offers functions with great interactivity and collaborative potential; however, its use has not yet been described in anatomy education.…”

“…[16] In addition, these tools can easily reach a large number of practitioners. [17] There are now multiple examples of virtual microscopy in medical and veterinary schools and residency programs across the country. [18192021] Virtual microscopy is also used for continuing medical education, licensure/board examinations, and teaching.…”

“…Some studies report that the quality of digital images is high, 22,23 but in other studies, diagnosticians stated a preference for LM for diagnostic work. 9,17,26 Even if these appear to be important limitations for the adoption of WSI for cytology, other studies highlight how a specific training and discussion meetings with simultaneous viewing of WSI cases can have a positive effect on WSI acceptance and changing of management routine. 6…”
