Integrating activity-based travel-demand models with land-use and other long-term lifestyle decisions

Abstract: This paper extends and integrates the general activity-based model framework to present the complex relationship between longterm individual decisions, such as residential location, and daily activity and travel-behavior decisions. More specifically, it demonstrates the use of an activity-based accessibility (ABA) measure as an important variable in residential zone choice, thus serving as the link between short-term activity and travel decisions and long-term residential choice decisions. We develop a partial… Show more

“…In recent years, research on changes in accessibility, conducted on the basis of ABA (activity-based accessibility) measures, has been gaining importance [135]. ABA is generated with a model based on a day activity schedule (DAS), where rather than being looked at independently, every trip is analysed in the framework of an activity system/schedule.…”

“…Ref. [135] demonstrates how to use activitybased accessibility (ABA) measures to determine the importance of daily accessibility as a variable in residence selection, such accessibility being an intermediate link between shortterm daily activities, including work and school commuting decisions, etc., and long-term residence decisions (see below for the impact of transport investments on housing prices).…”

“…To explore the implications, an AV ownership model (either private ownership or shared 'pass' membership) may be central for forecasts to capture AVs' impacts on the transportation system (El Zarwi, Vij, and Walker 2017;Nordhoff et al 2019). Several initiatives to integrate new technologies in modeling have already suggested a need to more flexibly reflect household travel and location decisions (Ciari, Balmer, and Axhausen 2007;Ciari, Schuessler, and Axhausen 2013;Katoshevski et al 2015).…”

“…One effect is that the duration of the main activity can affect the propensity to undertake a secondary trip (Shiftan and Ben-Akiva, 2011). For instance, when the duration of a particular activity is long and is considered the primary/main activity (Katoshevski et al, 2015), there may not be any secondary trip. On the other hand, shorter periods of activity can be followed by one or more secondary trips towards different activities.…”
