Integrating biological realism into habitat restoration and conservation strategies for small streams

Abstract: Successful habitat conservation or restoration must be biologically based, which requires an understanding of habitat variables most influencing fish; the relative influence of each habitat variable and the spatial scale over which each operates. Determining necessary habitat conditions requires examination from several perspectives, including observation of individual fish during all seasons and population analysis over a range of spatial scales. There is a definite spatial hierarchy of influences that must b… Show more

“…As a consequence of these results, retaining, enhancing, and restoring the diversity of the habitat (Simberloff, 1988;Freeman and Freeman, 1994;Rabeni and Sowa, 1996;Sutherland, 1998), with its mosaic of microhabitat patches (Cornell and Lawton, 1992;Robson and Chester, 1999), seem to be the only options available for conserving A. italicus and other indigenous species in stream communities (Douglas and Lake, 1994;Townsend and Hildrew, 1994).…”

“…This decision was based on the recognition that biodiversity conservation requires an ecosystem approach (Franklin 1993, Grumbine 1994, Leslie et al 1996, De Leo and Levin 1997 and that biodiversity can be described and should be conserved at multiple levels of organization (Whittaker 1962, 1972, Noss 1990, Jennings 1996, Rabeni and Sowa 1996, Grossman et al 1998, Olson and Dinerstein 1998, Abell et al 2000.…”

“…A growing body of literature suggests that the patterns of distribution for many fishes are the result of both local-habitat conditions and largerscale biotic and abiotic processes (e.g., Rabeni and Sowa 1996;Dunham et al 1997;Schrank et al 2001). The physical characteristics of streams at the small scale of individual habitat units or stream reaches have often been associated with variation in fish density (e.g., Rabeni and Sowa 1996;Watson and Hillman 1997).…”

“…The physical characteristics of streams at the small scale of individual habitat units or stream reaches have often been associated with variation in fish density (e.g., Rabeni and Sowa 1996;Watson and Hillman 1997). However, large-scale watershed or landscape features such as stream size, basin area, spatial geometry, and stream temperature or surrogates for climate (Bozek and Hubert 1992;Fausch et al 1994;Rieman and McIntyre 1995;Dunham et al 1997Harig and Fausch 2002) as well as biotic factors such as the presence of nonnative species and degree of isolation from other populations (Osborne and Wiley 1992;Schrank et al 2001) have also been implicated.…”
