Integrating Petrophysics, Geomodeling and Advanced Well Placement Technology for Efficient Field Development

Abstract: This paper describes how petrophysics and geomodeling, integrated with advanced well placement technology, can be used to optimize well trajectory in horizontal well drilling operations. We have simulated a 3D facies model of the Mulichinco Formation within a hydrocarbon field located in the Neuquén Basin (Argentina) by taking into account petrophysical, geological and geophysical data. The integrated approach allows to analysis of possible drilling scenarios and to prepare contingency plans in time for maximi… Show more

“…The data that are available for estimation include the depth of the top reservoir surface at the well entrance (marked by the black cross in Fig. 4a) and the directional-resistivity measurement-while-drilling (MWD) data (Bittar et al 2009;Chemali et al 2010). Three resistivity measurements with different directions and depths of investigation are assimilated every 6 m. The steering angle is optimized after assimilation of five sets of resistivity measurements (so every 30 m), on the basis of the most-up-to-date model realizations.…”
