Integrating phylogeography and paleoecology to investigate the origin and dynamics of hybrid zones: insights from two widespreadNorthAmerican firs

Abstract: Secondary contact between closely related taxa routinely occurs during postglacial migrations. After initial contact, the location of hybrid zones may shift geographically or remain spatially stable over time in response to various selective pressures or neutral processes. Studying the extent and direction of introgression using markers having contrasted levels of gene flow can help unravel the historical dynamics of hybrid zones. Thanks to their contrasted maternal and paternal inheritance, resulting in diffe… Show more

“…In the case of invading species, the pattern of introgression at some neutral loci resulting from the range expansion of a species into an already occupied territory may mimic the effect of selection. Therefore, more studies of the contact zone dynamics (e.g., Cinget et al 2015) at Zieleniec reserve and its neighborhood are needed. Such studies would help to test invasion models and evaluate the role of demographic processes on the patterns of genomewide nucleotide sequence variation.…”

“…However some hybrid zones have remained remarkably stable in the face of climate change as appears to be the case for that between two North American firs, Abies balsamea and A. lasiocarpa . A genetic analysis of this hybrid zone indicates that it has not moved since it originated at the end of the last glacial period, approximately 11 kyr ago (Cinget et al, ).…”
