Integrating Social and Political Strategies as Forms of Reciprocal Exchange into the Analysis of Corporate Governance Modes

Abstract: The concept and theory of reciprocity provide fruitful ways of integrating social and political strategies because both involve donating valuable resources to non‐market recipients – mainly non‐governmental organizations, politicians and regulators – who are not contractually bound to reciprocate although a return is normally expected. Besides, we interpret the use of non‐contractual reciprocity through relational‐models theory and transaction‐cost economics. The former offers a model of ‘equality‐matching’ th… Show more

“…The first paper in our special issue by Boddewyn and Buckley () provides a new take on transaction cost economics in conjunction with relational‐model theory, which helps to provide an explanation of how goods can be obtained from others without using transactions – namely through non‐contractual reciprocity. The authors demonstrate how the concept of reciprocity can provide a fruitful way for integrating social and political strategies given that CSR strategies such as philanthropy and CPA strategies such as lobbying share the feature of donating valuable resources to non‐market recipients.…”

“…Besides relying on the traditional contractual exchange modes of "buy, make and ally", the provision of collective goods often involves relationships with "nonmarket" actors such as government agents and NGOs so that it is pertinent to consider Parkhe's (1993) analysis of the nature of the alliances between market and nonmarket partners as compared with those exclusively between private organizations. In addition, Boddewyn and Buckley (2017) established, on the basis of Fiske's (1992) relational-models theory, that non-contractual relationships are also available for obtaining various goods from nonmarket actors. Both of these theoretical developments are relevant for the study of the provisioning of collective goods in emerging markets.…”
