Integrating Soundscape Criteria in Urban Sustainable Regeneration Processes: An Example of Comfort and Health Improvement

Abstract: This paper reports an example of an urban sustainable regeneration process in a small open square following the soundscape approach in urban design and involving a transdisciplinary team. The renovation of this urban public space brought changes in its acoustic environment and improved soundscape perception as much more pleasant (enhanced comfort). The rehabilitation broadened the use of the square and enhanced users’ wellbeing and health, showing a significant positive impact of sound: reduction in negative e… Show more

“…Findings of this paper discussed the role of "pleasantness" as the common perceived soundscape in the parks of Malaysia where "pleasantness" scored a higher scoring for the park soundscape perception. The above finding is consistent with numerous studies [30], [43], [45], [63] that showed pleasantness as predominant perceived soundscape of parks. This demonstrates how people in the parks experienced a high perception of natural sounds which them to feel calm and restored in the park.…”

“…Stress recovery theory suggests that human interaction with nature can reduce stress. By transforming the acoustic environment of Plaza Bilbao, Karmele changed its sound ambience and quality, the result increased the comfort and pleasure of residents in the square, indicating that a comfortable soundscape environment is conducive to people’s emotional recovery [ 40 ]. In the work environment, the more types of noise content there are, the lower the satisfaction and willingness of office workers to work [ 41 ].…”

“…Later a detailed taxonomy was proposed to understand the relationship between environment and types of sound sources [35]. Another model was introduced by Perception of Soundscape in Landscape DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.108938 Herranz-Pascual et al to seek the interaction between person, activity, and place in the environment [36]. The approach suggested a broad way of identifying sound sources and improving the soundscape which is based on the identification of wanted and unwanted sounds and the possibilities to control them.…”
