Integrating teams in multidisciplinary project based learning in Mechanical Engineering

Abstract: Abstract-Mechanical/Industrial Engineering students at Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) of TechnicalUniversity of Madrid (UPM) receive an in-depth knowledge of mechanical design and manufacturing processes, but the increasing interaction with other engineering branches, induces the need to integrate concepts which allow students to make an integral design of new products, and thereby facilitate their subsequent integration into multidisciplinary engineering teams in industry.Complex en… Show more

“…For instance, in [5], authors describe how a robot can be created in a course that is shared by some engineering majors. Also, in [6], researchers explain how four engineering courses were coordinated to obtain a final product. Likewise, authors of [7] detail a multidisciplinary approach to create projects with an emphasis in multicultural environments, that is, enable collaboration between participants from different countries.…”

“…Kostal, Mudrikova and Caganova [11], in Slovak University of Technology, Slovak Republic, improved their teaching methodologies through virtual laboratories, enforcing students' capacities to learn by their self-activity and self-responsibility and improving their communication skills. Martinez, Romero, Marquez and Perez [12] in Polytechnic University of Madrid promoted the PBL in their Mechanical/Industrial Engineering courses. Frank, Lavy and Elata [13], in Technion, Israel, implemented the PBL through mini-projects that require the design and construction of devices that perform pre-defined tasks.…”
