Integrating the theory of planned behaviour and self‐determination theory in health behaviour: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: Evidence from this synthesis supported the theoretical integration and proposed motivational sequence. Results are discussed with reference to the complementary aspects of the TPB and SDT and the need for integrated experimental or intervention studies on a broader range of health behaviours.

“…This is in line with a meta-analysis by Hagger and Chatzisarantis (2009) where path analysis revealed a significant effect of self-determined motivation on intentions with respect to physical activity and other health-related behaviours, mediated by proximal predictors derived from the TPB. The association between intrinsic motivation in the prediction of high school students' intentions to be physically active after graduation has also been identified by Hein and colleges (2004).…”

“…Like Hagger and Chatzisarantis (2009) and , we found self-determined motivation to be associated with increased physical activity intentions. Presenting students with different activity options enable students to choose activities which they perceive to be consistent with their goals and interests (Assor, Kapla, & Roth, 2002).…”

“…Running head: META-ANALYTIC PATH ANALYSIS IN PREVENTIVE MEDICINE 5 models in health behavior for many years (e.g., Carraro and Gaudreau, 2013;Hagger and Chatzisarantis, 2009;Hagger et al, 2002;Rich et al, 2015;Yu et al, 2007). To date such tests are relatively rare to the detriment of the advancement of science.…”

“…The CY-PSPP contains 6 subscales; Sport/Athletic, Attractive Body Adequacy, Condition, and Strength competence as well as Physical and Global Self-Worth. The Children and Youth Physical Self-Perception Profile (CY-PSPP) assesses the degree to which young people view themselves as competent in a variety of physical domains [37,38]. Each question contains two statements relating to either a positive perception of competence or a negative perception of competence.…”
