Integration of Electric Vehicles into Energy and Transport Systems

Abstract: There is a strong tendency of development and application of different types of electric vehicles (EV). This can clearly be beneficial for transport systems in terms of making it more efficient, cleaner, and quieter, as well as for energy systems due to the grid load leveling and renewable energy sources exploitation opportunities. The latter can be achieved only through application of smart EV charging technologies that strongly rely on application of optimization methods. For the development of both EV archi… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the impact of EVs' utilization is highly dependent on the electricity generation mix for charging the EVs batteries [158]. Incorporation of renewable energy sources in to the overall transportation energy mix, such as base-level hydroelectric power [163], as along with the more intermittent but still abundant wind and solar (photovoltaic) energy sources can further offset the greenhouse gases emissions and reduce air pollution [164].…”

“…Recently, there have been many efforts to electrify the transportation sector that show great potential for making the entire transportation system more efficient, cleaner, and less dependent on fossil fuels [4]. By including renewable energy sources such as hydro-electric power plants [5], along with the intermittent but still more abundant sources of wind energy and solar (photovoltaic) energy, in the overall transport energy mix, further reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution can be achieved [6].…”

“…Moreover, road transportation is the main cause of air pollution in cities, thus mandating a gradual shift towards hybridized and fully electric vehicle power trains [1]. With the global shift to a low-carbon economy and transport emissions' reduction, it is necessary to make an irreversible shift towards low-emission mobility, which will benefit society in general by improving the quality of air, reducing acoustic noise levels, reducing traffic congestion, and generally improving traffic safety [3]. In order to comply with this strategy, the European Commission has outlined three priority action areas [4]:…”
