Integration of Mechatronic and Automation Technology in Sustainable Farming for Achieving Food Security in Kenya

Abstract: Advanced farming that involves modern technology, especially in large scale, can aid in attaining food security for any given country. In this study, the prospects of automation, mechatronics and the developments for modern farming are explored for sustainable agriculture in Kenya.  For the purpose of technological diversification, the use of mechatronics and automation in various smart farming technological systems is presented. It is possible to step up development in realizing food security in Kenya with th… Show more

“…Another way is to transform traditional agricultural practices into sustainable food systems by embracing agroecology, regenerative agriculture, and responsible food production to ensure food security while minimizing environmental degradation. (Ontiri, & Amuhaya, 2022) It is also essential to transition from a linear "take, make, dispose" model to a circular economy that emphasizes resource efficiency, reuse, and recycling to eliminate waste and promote a closed-loop system where materials are continually reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and recycled to minimize environmental impact through reverse logistics (Nabango & Majale, 2022).…”

“…As of now, advanced farming technology can be an important part of farmers' daily work. According to [8], some of these innovative technological developments of autonomous farming machinery for potential operation in digital farming are GPS-enabled tractors, GPS-based remote-controlled robots, auto-steering tractors, and harvesting machinery. In Europe, precision agriculture (PA) and the integration of digital technology are established to become the most significant tendency in these sectors, as seen by the increasing number of planters who have begun to use digital technologies to operate their farms [9].…”
