Integration of physical health and sensory processing assessment for children with autism spectrum disorder in schools

Abstract: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often undergo various assessments and evaluations as part of the diagnostic process, identification and classification for special education eligibility, and continued progress monitoring for skill growth. Such evaluations may include cognitive, social and emotional, behavioral, and speech evaluations, among other skill and ability assessments. One other area for assessment that clinicians may consider examining when working on evaluations for individuals with AS… Show more

“…Children with ASD exhibit deficits in postural control, motor planning, and motor imitation, which may negatively impact their capacity to carry out motor activities that are age-appropriate (Hilton & Ratcliff, 2022). 90% of kids with ASD have sensory processing issues, such as tactile hypersensitivity and other sensory modulation abnormalities, which may make it difficult for them to continue participating in the motor activities needed for learning (Trudel et al, 2022). The desired level of age-appropriate motor development is not attained (Hebert et al, 2022).…”

“…On the other hand, the International Classification of Diseases offers a comprehensive framework for differentiating between ASDs and those that are not; it also considers past data regarding the loss of prior skills during the diagnostic process (Trudel et al, 2023;Menaka et al, 2024). The most challenging part of recognizing ASD is that there is no identifiable pathognomonic characteristic; instead, all symptoms center on altering the behavior profile of the affected person, which varies depending on the intensity and age.…”

“…Despite the advances brought by this kind of projects, there are still limitations on the research of physical interactions in the educational processes [6,7]. People with special educational needs often require special interaction elements [8,9], due to underdeveloped sensory, behavioral or cognitive capabilities.…”
