Integration of qualitative evidence: towards construction of academic knowledge in social science and professional fields

Abstract: In this article, we present an overview of the growing field of the integration of qualitative evidence. Based on an analysis of 177 syntheses published in a variety of professional and social science fields, they introduce a way of categorizing the various approaches that synthesists use to combine evidence derived from primary qualitative studies. Finally, they argue for the place of a constructionist approach when synthesizing findings from primary qualitative research. Keywordsconstructionism, critical int… Show more

“…As a result, visual data sets amenable to qualitative analysis can be assembled with relative ease, but the increase in scale can change the traditional terrain of qualitative analysis. Of course large data sets can be reduced and there are various strategies available for doing this, such as Q methodology (Stephenson, 1953) or other approaches to qualitative synthesis (Major and Savin--Baden, 2011), however if the intent is to survey a diverse population then this becomes challenging and any reduction or narrowing down could impact on the findings.…”

“…Algunos de estos autores reconocen que, en ciertos casos, no hay una diferencia real en términos metodológicos entre los nombres encontrados y que el uso de uno u otro puede relacionarse con la experiencia de los investigadores. En otros casos, la diferencia es muy marcada y está definida por la profundidad e intención de la integración de los estudios, por ejemplo, si solo se quiere describir globalmente o reinterpretar los hallazgos (17,(23)(24)(25).…”

“…This study is applying the techniques of qualitative research synthesis (Major & Savin-Baden, 2011;2010;Savin-Baden & Major, 2013). This is a qualitative approach to present findings of qualitative data analysis across studies and then interpret them in relation to further themes that emerge across studies.…”
