“…This is in contrast to previous studies that solicited PwDs' perceptions of AV without a lived experience in an AV (Etminani-Ghasrodashti et al, 2021;Hwang et al, 2020) or included adults with developmental or visual disabilities (Feeley et al, 2020) or physical and visual disabilities (Hwang et al, 2020;Mason et al, 2022). Researchers often incorporate universal design principles to investigate transportation barriers in a heterogeneous sample of PwDs (Etminani-Ghasrodashti et al, 2021;Feeley et al, 2020;Hwang et al, 2020). As observed in this study, an inclusive design approach offers numerous benefits specific to adults with SCI.…”

“…The primary strengths of this study were that the participants' perceptions were assessed with a valid and reliable AVUPS, before and after riding in the AS that operated on public roads with ambient traffic, and the strict inclusion of participants with an SCI. “…Although in this research the variables influencing the development of AVs in Iran were examined, the findings may be applied to other emerging nations with similar economic and social situations. As most of the existing study on AVs focuses on the public [80], it is advised that the viability of implementing AVs for passengers with diverse mobility and communication demands be investigated [83]. This is particularly crucial for Iran, a nation with a large proportion of elderly [72] and handicapped citizens who have difficulty using the standard public transportation networks now in place [84].…”

“…To develop the statements about service attributes, we referred to focus group discussions with members of the university community, people with disabilities, and members of the general public, which were performed before deploying the RAPID SAVs (38). These focus group discussions identified the main preferences and concerns of potential users about the proposed SAV service, including the capacity of the service, trip cost, safety, disability-friendly features of the service, accessibility, and reliability (38,39). To explore the concerns and preferences extracted from the SAV predeployment studies, we asked respondents to evaluate the SAV service features: ease of booking and scheduling SAV rides through the mobile application, waiting time, the convenience of pickup and dropoff locations, ease of boarding, comfort of the seats, climate control, speed of the vehicles, feeling safe in the vehicles, and feeling safe when sharing rides with other passengers.…”
