Integration of Six Sigma methodology of DMADV steps with QFD, DFMEA and TRIZ applications for image-based automated inspection system development: a case study

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to present the development of an automated inspection system (AIS) using an image-based analysis mechanism, called i-AIS. The development process of i-AIS used the Design Six Sigma (DSS) methodology. The steps of define, measure, analyze, design and verify (DMADV) are applied and integrated with specific analyses techniques of the quality function deployment (QFD), design failure mode effect analysis (DFMEA) and theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). The production process of adhes… Show more

“…Subsequently, the main steps of QFD are known to be defined as a customer deployment tool by DFSS (Baptista et al ., 2020). This tool is widely used to evidence the voice of customer (VOC) data; therefore, the six questions are used in products (Johnson et al ., 2006) and services (Purushothaman and Ahmad, 2022) in the Define phase, as well as Measure towards both Decision Matrixes and Benchmarking, and using the What-How Matrix with Analyze. Synthesis of such integration could be seen in Figure 10.…”

“…Whereas the second approach given by d efine – m easure – a nalyze – i mprove– c ontrol (DMAIC) (Jamil et al ., 2020; Soundararajan and Janardhan Reddy, 2019; Prashar, 2020; Shipa et al ., 2021) is aimed to improve products or processes at six sigma quality levels; therefore, a product or service has to be created beforehand (Selvi and Majumdar, 2014). Previous product research exercises applying the DMADV sequence in diverse industry sectors such as electronic devices (Purushothaman and Ahmad, 2022), home appliances (Bidikar et al ., 2021) and transportation (Rajendran and Popfinger, 2022). Therefore, DFSS final output by using the DMADV approach would be a customer-centered product concept, as findings of such are reported in Figure 6.…”

“…The score was in a range of 0-9, where 9 indicated 'Strong relationship', 3 indicated 'Medium relationship', 1 indicated 'Weak relationship', and 0 indicated 'not relevant'. These assessments are conducted by the experts who considered various aspects such as customer needs, technical viability, and design integrity (Purushothaman & Ahmad 2022;Singh & Agrawal 2022). For instance, when considering the relationship between A1 (Simple locking mechanism) and B1 (Clamp lock), where the clamp lock should be easily fastened, it became evident that the two components were interrelated and mutually impactful.…”
