Integration of the viewpoint mechanism in federated databases

Abstract: The opening of the databases towards the new applications of increased complexity requires to re-examine the way of designing the database conceptual schema. Indeed, it would be desirable that the schema can be a specification that takes account into several points of view. Each point of view represents an aspect of the data description that is held by an independent database known as partial. This process confers a decentralised vision of the conceptual schema. Various models and mechanisms of views even less… Show more

“…All these models consider the viewpoint as a view or external schema defined with the aim of adapting an existing structure to new needs. In our study we argue that the view and the viewpoint concepts concern respectively the exploitation step and the design one (Benchikha and al. 2001).…”

“…All these models consider the viewpoint as a view defined with the aim of adapting an existing structure to new needs. In our study we argue that the view and the viewpoint concepts concern the exploitation step and the design step respectively (Benchikha, Boufaida & Seinturier, 2001). Thus, while views provide users with a schema that is structured appropriately for their applications, viewpoints must be directly related to an object's description and deal with multiple instantiations of the same object (Figure 1, (b), (c)).…”

“…If the local constraints are well apprehended, it is difficult to take into account the global constraints. Within the framework of the MVDB model, the classical conflicts usually met in federated databases are solved by the viewpoint paradigm [6] such as names, semantic and structural conflicts. However, other types of conflicts are distinguished.…”
