“…Overall, the relationships found within this family are consistent with previous phylogenetic analyses (Song et al ., 2008 ; Santacruz et al ., 2020 ; Kvach et al ., 2021 ; Oliveira et al ., 2021 ) and suggest that the genus Ergasilus is not monophyletic. Nevertheless, further morphological studies combined with molecular data are needed to elucidate the evolutionary relationships and origin of this diverse group of parasitic copepods.…”

“…Due to the close relationship of species belonging to Lernaeidae and Ergasilidae (Song et al, 2008; Kvach et al, 2021; Abdel-Radi et al, 2022), three representatives of Lernaeidae were chosen as outgroup. Sequences of three species of Mytilicolidae Bocquet & Stock, 1957 and two species of Myicolidae Yamaguti, 1936 were also added to the alignment because previous studies indicate close ties of these families with Ergasilidae (Khodami et al, 2019; Oliveira et al, 2021). We aligned 18S and 28S rDNA sequences using L-INS-i in MAFFT v.7.409 (Katoh & Standley, 2013) and removed poorly aligned positions and divergent regions using the options for less stringent parameters (options: - b2= < minimum > -b3=10 -b4=5 -b5=h) in Gblocks v.0.91b (Talavera & Castresana, 2007).…”

“…Their habitat is impressively diverse -copepods inhabit almost every aquatic ecosystem, from the depths of the oceans (Brodskaya 1963) to the heights of mountains (Kikuchi 1994), underscoring their integral role in the aquatic invertebrate ecosystem (Easton et al 2014a). It's important to note that while the majority of copepods lead an independent life, some have adapted to a parasitic existence (Oliveira et al 2021).…”
