Integrative taxonomy of the genus Dudgeodes Sartori, 2008 (Insecta, Ephemeroptera, Teloganodidae) from the Philippines with description of new species and supplementary descriptions of Southeast Asian species

Abstract: COI sequences were used as an initial clustering method to delimit putative species of the genus Dudgeodes in the Philippines. An overview of the diagnostic characters of Philippine species and characters with high intraspecific variability are given. Six new species of Dudgeodes are described and illustrated: D. bauernfeindi Garces & Sartori, sp. nov., D. freitagi Garces & Sartori, sp. nov., D. luntian Garces & Sartori, sp. nov., D. pangantihoni Garces & Sartori, sp. nov., D. t… Show more

“…Moreover, most species (14) are restricted to one island. Although partly due to localities missing in this study, island endemics are quite common among aquatic insect species of the Philippines ( Freitag and Balke 2011 ; Freitag 2013 ; Freitag and Zettel 2013 ; Komarek and Freitag 2014 , 2020 ; Vidal et al 2017 ; Garces et al 2018, 2020 ; Pelingen and Freitag 2020 ). This island endemic pattern suggests allopatry as a major driver of speciation, as already discussed for Labiobaetis in New Guinea and in Indonesia ( Kaltenbach and Gattolliat 2018 and citations therein, Kaltenbach and Gattolliat 2019 ).…”

“…For the first time, an integrative taxonomic approach was applied to describe a new Philippine Neoperla species using a newly designed primer. The same primer has proved to be efficient in generating DNA barcodes of Ephemeroptera species ( Garces et al 2018 , 2020 ). In a preliminary analysis of a comprehensive assessment of Swiss stoneflies ( Gattolliat et al 2016 ), one of the factors pointed out is the need to explore more specific primers other than the standard COI primers ( Folmer et al 1994 ) for better output.…”

“…Thus, to accelerate species discovery of the almost cryptic Byrrhinus fauna in a megadiverse locality, this study uses DNA sequences to complement morphological descriptions. This approach, referred to as integrative taxonomy (Dayrat 2005;Will et al 2005), has been performed in several aquatic and riparian insect groups to fast-track biodiversity documentation (Tänzler et al 2014;Riedel and Tänzler 2016;Garces et al 2020;Kodada et al 2020;Sabordo et al 2020).…”
