Cambeva melanoptera sp. nov. is described from stream tributaries of the Rio Iratim, Rio Iguaçu drainage, southern Brazil. This new species is remarkable with a colour pattern not found elsewhere among trichomycterid catfishes, consisting of a broad distal black zone in all unpaired and pectoral fins, strongly contrasting with a pale-yellow proximal zone. C. melanoptera also differs from all other trichomycterids from eastern South America by the presence of the nasal barbel about thrice longer than the maxillary and rictal barbels. Due to the presence of a similar bicolour caudal fin, the new species is tentatively considered closely related to Cambeva castroi and Cambeva diabola, as well as more closely related to C. castroi than to C. diabola, with the first two species sharing the presence of a curved lateral process of the parurohyal and a trapezoidal projection on the lateral margin of the lateral ethmoid. The great morphological diversity found in Cambeva species endemic to the Rio Iguaçu drainage, including numerous exclusive characteristics not occurring in congeners and in any other species of closely related trichomycterine genera, indicates the need for more studies focusing on possible causal factors responsible for such unique diversification pattern.

Two new remarkable and endangered catfish species of the genus Cambeva (Siluriformes, Trichomycteridae) from southern Brazil

During a field inventory directed at trichomycterine habitats, two new species of the genus Cambeva, C. alphabelardense sp. nov. and C. betabelardense sp. nov., were found in the Rio Chapecó drainage, an area under high environmental decline due to intensive soya monoculture. These species share a peculiar head morphology and some unique osteological features, besides having a size that is smaller than in any other congener, being herein considered to be more closely related to each other than to other taxa. They differ from each other by several characters, including head shape, fin morphology, number of jaw teeth and opercular odontodes, and mesethmoid and metapterygoid shape. Furthermore, they were found in the same area, but in distinct biotopes, with one species found buried in the remnants of tree ferns and other plants on the stream bottom, restricted to a small residual fragment of the original forest, and the other species inhabiting a stream with gravel and small stones on the bottom. Field studies indicate that these species are threatened with extinction. Robust phylogenetic studies are still necessary to test relationship hypotheses involving the new taxa here described.

É uma espécie descrita em 2021, desmembrada com outras congêneres do grupo T. reinhardti, até então uma espécie amplamente distribuída, frequente e abundante. A taxonomia e a sistemática do gênero Trichomycterus está em franca reorganização, com muitas espécies sendo descritas, sinonimizadas ou redescritas, inclusive com alterações de gênero. Por isso, ainda não houve tempo hábil para que as coleções científicas pudessem atualizar as nomenclaturas dos exemplares do gênero, de forma que muitas informações relevantes para avaliar o estado de conservação dessas espécies ainda não estão plenamente disponíveis. Trichomycterus sainthilairei foi coletada às margens de uma rodovia, a montante de um grande reservatório, em uma região historicamente impactada e atualmente com vocação turística. Uma vez que não há perspectiva de piora no estado de conservação dos seus ambientes de forma a colocar a sua população em risco de extinção, T. sainthilairei foi categorizada como Menos Preocupante (LC).
