Intelligent Control Based on a Neural Network for Aircraft Landing Gear with a Magnetorheological Damper in Different Landing Scenarios

Abstract: A typical oleo-pneumatic shock-absorbing strut (classic traditional passive damper) in aircraft landing gear has a metering pin extending through the orifice, which can vary the orifice area with the compression and extension of the damper strut. Because the metering pin is designed in a single landing condition, the traditional passive damper cannot adjust its damping force in multiple landing conditions. Magnetorheological (MR) dampers have been receiving significant attention as an alternative to traditiona… Show more

“…Formula (6) takes into account the sum of CWT for the 32-256 scale range, while Formula (7) takes into account the entire range of frequencies. The scaling coefficients 0.512 and 0.373 have been chosen deliberately, so that the standard deviations of noise (σ in ) of the virtual signals (6) and 7have the same values with VSig 1 (5). The coefficients were calculated using the measurement database from research flights of I-31T.…”

“…The use of onboard cameras and image analysis systems may in the future enable precise measurements for the needs of normal operation of small aviation, but such works are currently at an experimental level [5]. The unmistakable determination of the moment when the wheels contact the runway surface is crucial for automatic control systems and active dumpers [6]. The signal enables effective braking of the aircraft.…”

“…Hence, we modeled a helicopter following Fennec but with three landing gears instead of the original skids in this study. In particular, we assumed that the landing gears were equipped with MR dampers, which have been regarded as a promising candidate to improve landing gear performance by controlling the damping force [9,[15][16][17]. In our previous research, a single landing gear equipped with an MR damper for a small aircraft was designed [16,17], as can be seen in Figure 2.…”

“…Qiang Xu and et al [15] developed a back-propagation artificial neural network, which is optimized by an artificial bee colony algorithm based on the control force calculated by a linear quadratic regulator. Luong and et al [16] applied an intelligent controller based on a neural network to improve the landing performance in different landing cases. The neural network is trained by using a genetic algorithm and policy gradient estimation.…”
