Intelligent digital twins and the development and management of complex systems

Abstract: The interest in defining and implementing Digital Twins (DT) is at the forefront of today’s product organizations. The evolution of increasingly complex systems requires that their information be organized and managed via digital twins.  In addition, the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will result in an increasing degree of system complexity. These complex systems will exhibit true emergent behavior as AIs modify system aspects as the result of goal seeking and learning. DTs will need to increase i… Show more

“…Michael Grieves recently published research about the common misunderstanding that the Digital Twin does not exist unless there is a physical object [11]. According to Grieves, the primary criterion for determining if a digital model is a Digital Twin is whether the model is designed to become a physical product with a physical counterpart.…”

“…It involves the management of the physical asset and the associated digital knowledge within the scope of the project [5,29]. Likewise, BIM considers the entire life cycle of an asset, including quality control and asset management [30][31][32][33][34]. BIM has potential applicability and benefits in the service and maintenance stage, according to many types of research [35][36][37], and some leading FM organizations are pushing the use of BIM in this stage.…”

“…Grieves declares that Digital Twin is a result of three elements: physical product, its virtual representation and a flow of different data and information that is circulating between those two [5]. Keeping in mind the progressing digitalization and the industrial revolution Grieves and Vickers in further papers defined the Digital Twin as "a digital informational construct of a physical system as an entity on its own" [6].…”

“…The distribution of industrial cases according to industry segment is presented on Error! Reference source not found.. As it can be seen from the chart the Industrial Machinery appeared the most often in the research papers (33 articles), and it was then followed by Aerospace applications (11) and Marine Transportation applications (6). Due to the fact that industrial machinery is undeniably related to manufacturing the breakdown of Digital Twin applications' case studies were made.…”

“…The concept of Digital Twin (DT) was presented in 2002 by Michael Grieves as a conceptual idea for Product Lifecycle Management [17]. Grieves presented virtual and real systems having a link throughout all phases of the product lifecycle from design to disposal.…”
