of main observation and conclusion Process reinforcement research was carried out in Y-junction slug flow microreactors under variable conditions, using EHEHPA (2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl) to extract yttrium(III) from hydrochloric acid solution. The influence of pH and flow rate on the extraction-reaction efficiency, slug size, mass transfer performance was assessed. The experimental results showed that maximum extraction-reaction efficiency of 91.85% can be achieved in the smallest microreactor (residence time is 11.25 s), which was significantly higher than traditional extraction requiring more than 10 min. The slug length tended to decrease with the increase of pH and flow rate. Volumetric mass transfer coefficients for the slug flow microreactors were found to be in the range of 1.39×10 −1 -1.642 s −1 that is several orders of magnitude higher as compared to traditional extractors, which testified the beneficial effects of Y-junction slug flow microreactor. Significant mass transfer reinforcement has prompted the use of microreactor as a suitable alternative to traditional extractors, which can advantageously improve the economic and environmental development of mineral processing. www.cjc.wiley-vch.deHe et al.

Hydrodynamics plays a major role in transport of heat and mass transfer in microchannels. This includes flow patterns and flow regimes in which the micro-channels are operated. The flow patterns have a major impact the transport properties. Another important aspect is the pressure drop in micro-channels. In the present review, the experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies covering all the above aspects have been covered. The effect of geometrical parameters like shape of channel, channel size, material of construction of channels; operating parameters like flow velocity, flow ratio and fluid properties have been presented and analyzed. Experimental and analytical work of different pressure drop models has also been presented. All the literature related to influence of flow patterns on transport properties like volumetric mass transfer coefficients (VMTC) and heat transfer coefficients (HTC) have been presented and analyzed. It is found that most works in Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) systems have been carried out in slug flow and T-junctions. Models for coupled systems of flow and mass transfer have been presented and works carried out for different coupled systems have been listed. CFD simulations match experimental results within 20% deviations in quantitative and qualitative predictions of flow phenomena for most research articles referred in this review. There is a disparity in prediction of a generalized regime map and a generalized regime map for prediction of flow patterns for various systems would need the help of Artificial Intelligence.

This work introduced a novel microchannel extractor. The extraction system was to extract lanthanum nitrate aqueous solution with 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (EHEHPA). Different feeding methods and inner rotors were explored first. The results showed that parallel feeding and inner rotors engraved with spiral stripes were more favorable for extraction. Next, the effect of various factors on the extraction was explored, including the pH of the aqueous phase, rotational inner rotor speed (R) and the fluid volumetric flow rate (Q). The results showed that these factors are closely related to the extraction. Finally, the experiment was verified by CFD numerical simulation, the simulation result was consistent with the experiment. In this device, active mixing was introduced into the microchannel extraction, which significantly improved the extraction efficiency. Under certain conditions, the extraction efficiency of this device exceeded stirring extraction equilibrium. Moreover, the extraction in this device is faster than conventional stirring extraction. These advantages provide a possibility for highly efficient extraction and use of rare earth elements.
