Abstract: These results suggest that MIRT might slow down the progression of motor decay, it might delay the need for increasing drug treatment, and thus, it might have a neuroprotective effect.

“…Recent data from our research programme has shown, in particular, that multidisciplinary therapy increases grey matter volume in the caudate tail and dorsolateral PFC in patients with manifest HD (147). This therapy has also been reported to improve cognitive function, quality of life and depressive symptoms in patients with mild AD and cognitive impairment without dementia (148) and in PD, multidisciplinary therapy has been reported to improve motor performance, dyskinesias, balance and gait and slow disease progression (149)(150)(151). The molecular mechanisms driving these neural and clinical changes are yet to be investigated.…”

“…In addition, specific exercise programs have been developed and studied recently. Potentially, effective programs are an Intensive Rehabilitation Program (4 weeks, 5 times a week, combined types of exercise) [78,79], and the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment -BIG program (high amplitude movements, sensory recalibration and self-cueing) [80]. Other types of exercise for which evidence is increasing are Tai Chi [81][82][83], hydrotherapy [84], boxing [85] and dancing [86][87][88].…”

“…Several studies have demonstrated that regular aerobic exercise improves balance and motor symptoms, reduces indicators of depression, improves cardiovascular health, and enhances overall quality of life in PD patients in short-term and long-term follow up studies alike (Canning et al, 2015;Frazzitta et al, 2015;Frazzitta et al, 2014;Uc et al, 2014). Two studies showed that these improvements in PD symptoms correlated with a normalization in the level of circulating biomarkers of PD.…”

“…Experimental and epidemiological studies have demonstrated that living a healthy and physically active lifestyle reduces the risk (Barnes and Yaffe, 2011;Scarmeas et al, 2009;Zou et al, 2015) and severity of neurological diseases (Archer and Kostrzewa, 2015;Canning et al, 2015;Erickson et al, 2012;Eyre and Baune, 2012;Frazzitta et al, 2015;Frazzitta et al, 2014;Liu et al, 2013;Radak et al, 2007;Radak et al, 2013;Suijo et al, 2013;Uc et al, 2014;Yu et al, 2014). However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for these beneficial effects of PA have not been established.…”
