Intentional Ingestion of a Metallic Wire Causing Perforation and Retroperitoneal Abscess: A Case Report

Abstract: Foreign body ingestion is a frequent condition, with the majority of foreign bodies (FBs) tending to spontaneously proceed along the gastrointestinal tract without any major complications. A wide range of procedures are available to remove FBs; however, a real challenge exists in managing sharp, rigid, and long foreign objects, which are related to higher rates of complications. A 34-year-old man who intentionally swallowed a metallic wire of 20 cm length, presented to our ED with abdominal pain 2 weeks after … Show more

“…Given the fact that elderly patients might experience a form of esophageal dysmotility, their chances to expel ingested objects spontaneously are much lower compared to the general population [ 1 ]. Along the passage course, impacted objects might end up with a wide spectrum of complications, manifesting in a form of abscess (retropharyngeal, hepatic or retroperitoneal), esophageal or intestinal perforation, bowel obstruction, hemorrhage and even death [ 4 , 9 ]. Impaction of swallowed items might occur near areas of anatomical narrowing such as the lower esophageal sphincter, pylorus, ileocecal valve and, in rare instances, the appendiceal lumen [ 10 ].…”

“…Deregulation of epigenetic homeostasis can result in altered gene expression and malignant cellular transformation. Global alteration in the epigenetic map is a distinguished feature of cancer (Maleknia et al, 2023). The administration of epi-drugs, either in standalone or in conjunction with immunotherapy or chemotherapy, has demonstrated strikingly favourable outcomes, such as the onset of anti-cancer implications, the reversal of drug resistance, and the improvement of the host's immune system (Lu et al, 2020;Mahmoud et al, 2021).…”

“…Furthermore, in the management of the FBs, some need an operative intervention due to complications or failure of other options [ 2 ]. FBs passing the GI tract may cause serious complications such as bowel obstruction, aspiration, hemorrhage, perforation, fistulization, abscess formation, septicemia, and death [ 2 , 5 ]. Here, we report a case of intentional ingestion of two sewing needles (2 months before admission) in a 26-year-old woman brought to the hospital with abdominal pain.…”
