Inter-comparison of stable iron, copper and zinc isotopic compositions in six reference materials of biological origin

Abstract: There is a lack of certified reference materials with an organic matrix for which metal isotope ratios have been certified. Here, we have determined the iron, copper and zinc stable isotopic compositions for six reference materials of biological origin with diverse matrices, i.e. BCR-380R (whole milk), BCR-383 (beans), ERM-CE464 (tuna fish), SRM-1577c (bovine liver), DORM-4 (fish protein) and TORT-3 (lobster hepatopancreas) in three different labs. The concentrations for six major and sixteen trace elements, s… Show more

“…The two full replicates measured for NIST1515, which underwent identical procedures in separate beakers from the digestion process, present identical values (−0.71 ± 0.06%0 and −0.71 ± 0.04%0). Two samples (ERC-CE464, tuna fish and ERM-BB186, pig kidney) had previously been analysed ( 51 , 52 ) and our data are in very good agreement with previously reported values ( Figure 2 ). The isotopic composition of BHVO-2 is within error of previously published values [0.17 ± 0.03%0 for δ 57 Fe and 0.10 ± 0.04%0 for δ 56 Fe, e.g., ( 56 )].…”

“…Quality control of stable isotopic measurements necessitates well-characterised and widely available reference materials, with a matrix similar to the matrix of the sample of interest. Although research fields such as geochemistry benefit from numerous extensively characterised international reference rock materials, metal isotope compositions of certified reference materials of biological origin are very scarce [e.g., ( 50 52 )]. In this context, we have determined the Fe isotope composition in nine widely available international biological standards.…”

“…Iron was isolated by ion-exchange chromatography as described in details in previous study (27). Briefly, the dried residue was taken up in HCl 6N and evaporated to dryness twice to guarantee total removal of remaining nitrate from the digestion procedure.…”

“…Iron solutions were diluted to 0.9 mg/L and doped with Ni at the same concentration to monitor and correct for instrumental mass fractionation. The instrument settings and analytical conditions are described in previous work (27). All the Fe isotope compositions are given in the delta annotation (expressed in ‰) and reported relative to the international isotopic standard NIST IRMM-014 with the following formula:…”

“…We first evaluated the quality of the dissolution method by comparing the results of element concentration (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, S, and Zn) in all the reference materials (SRM‐1577c, BCR‐383, BCR‐380R, ERM‐CE464, DORM‐2, DORM‐4, TORT‐3, and FBS), with those published in Sauzéat et al 16 Our data strongly correlate with certified values ( R = 0.99; P ‐value <2.2 × 10 −16 ; n = 37) according to a linear regression with a slope of 0.96 (±0.01) and an offset at origin of –163 (±742), showing that the dissolution step was efficient at solubilizing all the elements. We also calculated the yields of Mg for the whole elution method and found quantitative yields (from 80% to 106%) for all the reference materials (SRM‐1577c, BCR‐383, BCR‐380R, ERM‐CE464, DORM‐2, DORM‐4, and TORT‐3), except for FBS (where the Mg yield was 77%).…”
