Inter-rater reliability between nurses for a new paediatric triage system based primarily on vital parameters: the Paediatric Triage Instrument (PETI)

Abstract: IntroductionThe major paediatric triage systems are primarily based on flow charts involving signs and symptoms for orientation and subjective estimates of the patient's condition. In contrast, the 4-level Paediatric Triage Instrument (PETI) is primarily based on vital parameters and was developed exclusively for paediatric triage in patients with medical symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the inter-rater reliability of this triage system in children when used by nurses.MethodsA design was employed … Show more

“…They were able to demonstrate that common characteristics are repeated in all current prehospital triage systems, and, that it is feasible to combine various triage systems in order to develop a unified global system. 27 Even if ANKUTRIAGE is not a translational triage tool, during the first step of the tool's development, current reference triage systems were reviewed by the project team. Translation or adaptations of triage scales are difficult because of language induced errors and major differences in medical care management due to local and regional specifities.…”

“…39 Despite their frequent use in the health area, the kappa coefficient values should be evaluated with caution, since k is strongly influenced by the distribution of the classification of the categories. Authors further suggest that one should not evaluate the values obtained on the basis of strict classifications on a good, fair or poor coefficient.…”

“…Karjala e colaboradores (2017), ao abordarem os sistemas de triagem baseados em sinais vitais (SV), afirmam que eles devem ser fáceis e rápidos de usar, devido ao alto grau de deterioração súbita em pacientes pediátricos, o que demanda uma reavaliação contínua. Desse modo, a incorporação da aferição de sinais vitais mostra-se de suma importância para a checagem correta do estado do paciente(KARJALA et al, 2017).…”
