Inter-regional wage differentials in Spain

Abstract: The paper analyses the wage differentials among different Spanish regions. Hedonic wage equations are first formulated for those regions and then the wage decomposition method is applied, which allows separation of the effects due to characteristics from those due to returns. The results show that in the Centre and South, half of the wage differential corresponds to each concept, whereas in the North and East the difference is due more to the different remuneration than to the different characteristics. The va… Show more

“…analysis of wage differentials across regions has been limited so far, and constrained to models that do not control for individuals' decision to participate in the labour market (Reilly, 1991;García and Molina, 2002). The results for the set of Spanish regions confirm differences in terms of human capital endowment, and also in the return that individuals obtain in each region.…”

“…In addition to contributing new empirical evidence to the analysis of regional earnings differentials in Spain, already demonstrated by various authors (El-Attar and Lopez-Bazo, 2006;García and Molina, 2002;Izquierdo and Lacuesta, 2007;Motellón et al, 2011;Ramos and Sanromá, 2006;Serrano, 2002;Simón, 2009;Villaverde and Maza, 2002, among others), a novel aspect of the study performed here is the inclusion, as an explanatory variable of ISSN 1948-5433 2015 wages, the possible excess supply of university graduates in certain regional labour markets.…”

“…The theory of compensating differences predicts that the coefficients for regional amenities will be negative, while the coefficients for disamenities and productive amenities will be positive. 22 In estimating equation (1), one should take into account regional clusterisation. The wages of workers from one region may be correlated, and the estimates for dispersion of regional coefficients may vary considerably.…”
