Abstract. We followed the work of an international research network that holds regular meetings in technology-enhanced environments. The team is geographically distributed and to support its collaborative work it uses a set of technical artifacts, including audio-and videoconferencing systems and a media space. We have been studying some of the techniques and social conventions the team develops for its collaboration, and different aspects of what it mean to be located in a shared but distributed workspace. Our approach has been to analyze the initiatives and responses made by the team members. Over time the group created conventions; e.g. the chair introduces team members participating only by audio and members turn off their microphones when not talking. The latter convention led to the side effect of faster decision making. We also identified two characteristics, implicit excluding and explicit including, in a situation where the majority of the team members were co-located.

Abstract. This is an analysis of data from a first attempt to combine (a) VMT technology, (b) helping agents, (c) collaborative small groups, and (d) accountable-talk prompting in order to scaffold biology student online chats about videotaped results of a biology experiment. Analysis of the response structure of the chat log of one of the student groups reveals characteristics of their interactions in terms of building collaborative knowledge. In particular, the mediation by the VMT technology, helping agents and accountable-talk training is analyzed to determine their influences in promoting productive learning-oriented interaction. A design-based research analytic perspective provides suggestions for redesign of the socio-technical approach based on the findings of the interaction analysis.

After the design and development of the teleradiology system, a work practice oriented approach was used to gain a more holistic understanding of the relationship between the emerging work practice and the newly implemented technology, and to provide information for redesigning the system. The approach which utilized ethnographically informed fieldwork and cooperative workshops was introduced. Cooperation, the chain of tasks, and articulation work of teleradiology work practice were described, with the focus on image interpretation in particular. From the point of view of radiologists' image interpretation work, a report was made on how these findings influenced the evaluation and redesign of the system. Furthermore, the problematics of distributed collaboration, reorganization of work, and education are emphasized.
