INTERACTION BETWEEN THE BROAD-LINED TYPE Ic SUPERNOVA 2012ap AND CARRIERS OF DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS

Abstract: The diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are absorption features observed in optical and near-infrared spectra that are thought to be associated with carbon-rich polyatomic molecules in interstellar gas. However, because the central wavelengths of these bands do not correspond with electronic transitions of any known atomic or molecular species, their nature has remained uncertain since their discovery almost a century ago. Here we report on unusually strong DIBs in optical spectra of the broadlined Type Ic super… Show more

“…One might thus infer a special fragility of its likely cation carriers. This could be confirmed by its early destruction in SN 2012ap (Milisavljevic et al 2014). We also note the extreme behaviour of the 5797 Å DIB in the sight line of SN 2014J in M82 .…”

“…The doublet is far weaker in the Galactic foreground, consistent with the assumed low reddening from this contribution. We have also indicated in Figure 6 the presumed location from the host galaxy of the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) feature at 5780 Å, the strength of which can be used to infer visual extinction A V (Phillips et al 2013) and which can change over time in a subset of SNe Ib/c (Milisavljevic et al 2014). …”

“…Temporal evolution of these lines could signify changes in ionization balance induced by the SN radiation field as shown for Na i D (Patat et al 2007;Blondin et al 2009;Simon et al 2009;Sternberg et al 2014), for K i (Graham et al 2015) and possibly for DIBs as well (Milisavljevic et al 2014). We investigate this by analyzing the temporal evolution of the pEW of these lines.…”
