Interaction effects of multimorbidity and frailty on adverse health outcomes in elderly hospitalised patients

Abstract: We quantified the interaction of multimorbidity and frailty and their impact on adverse health outcomes in the hospital setting. Using aretrospective cohort study of persons aged ≥ 75 years, admitted to hospital during 2010–2012 in New South Wales, Australia, and linked with mortality data, we constructed multimorbidity, frailty risk and outcomes: prolonged length of stay (LOS), 30-day mortality and 30-day unplanned readmissions. Relative risks (RR) of outcomes were obtained using Poisson models with random in… Show more

“…These finding are similar to reports from a recent meta-analysis of frailty in COVID-19.30 In our study, readmission was also higher in frail patients, especially in those with mild-moderate frailty. Previous studies have noted a higher risk of readmission in frail individuals with multiple chronic diseases after surgical or medical admission [ 33 ]. In our study the patients with severe frailty did not have a higher risk of readmission.…”

“…Record linkage techniques [ 89 ] such as probabilistic matching [ 90 ] bridge this gap by linking disparate data records, offering a more comprehensive view of a patient’s health. Nevertheless, our synthetic data sets, despite their potential, carry limitations such as the absence of a master linkage key [ 91 ], thereby reducing their applicability in university courses for data management and curation. Having such linked data sets are also great for health data science students to test hypotheses on the effects of comorbidities.…”
