Interaction Mechanism of Anabolic Steroid Hormones with Structural Components of Erythrocyte Membranes

Abstract: The interaction of testosterone, androsterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) with erythrocyte membranes was studied. It was shown that testosterone and androsterone have a high constant of binding to the membranes (K(b) ≈ 10(6) M(-1)), whereas K(b)'s for DHEA and DHEAS are 2 orders of magnitude lower. Hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions play an important role in binding of anabolic steroids. Hydrogen bonds form with CO and NH groups both of membrane proteins … Show more

“…Mechanical stresses in membranes affect the ability of erythrocytes to fold when they pass through micro capillaries [30]. These stresses change under the influence of exogenous and endogenous factors: hormones [31,32], nanoparticles [33][34][35][36], blood plasma proteins [37], vitamin E [38]. Apparently, the change in the microviscosity of the erythrocyte membranes is one of the mechanisms of a human body adaptation to the harsh conditions of the Far North.…”

“…Longitudinal mechanical compressive stresses prevail in the erythrocyte membranes, when they pass through arteries and veins, which diameter is larger than erythrocytes [19,31]. There are no conditions for the kinks-solitons formation.…”

“…The levels of hydroxyandrosterone (a product of androsterone) and cortolone were significantly elevated in hypertensive patients compared to HCs, suggesting that steroid hormone biosynthesis was associated with hypertension [ 34 ]. Androsterone has previously been reported to have the ability to reduce the micro-viscosity of the cell membrane and, consequently, red blood plasticity, causing the red blood cells to form large clots leading to the development of proliferation and hypoxia with a significant effect on the cardiomyocytes and BP [ 34 , 87 ]. Other hormones, including epiandrosterone sulfate, 5 α-androstan-3β-diol disulfate, androsterone sulfate, melatonin cortolone, dihydroxyphenylglycol, and hydroxyandrosterone, were also reported to play a notable role in arterial hypertension [ 35 ].…”
