SF 6 circuit breakers are the key technology in high voltage (HV) circuit breakers due to the excellent properties of SF 6 in arc extinction and insulation. Since a few years vacuum is starting to enter in this market for the lower high voltages ratings of 72,5kV and 84kV. The main driver for this evolution is the growing market demand for SF 6 free switchgear mainly for environmental reasons. The use of vacuum interrupters for high voltage applications nevertheless asks for new solutions to achieve the dielectric withstand and capacitive switching performances at voltage levels of 72,5kV and above. In this paper the results on three different solution approaches for the application of vacuum interrupters for high voltage applications will be discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of a single break high voltage vacuum interrupter for 72,5kV / 31,5kA will be compared to a solution using two standard medium voltage 36kV vacuum interrupters in series arrangement. Results on breaking tests and capacitive switching tests will be shown. The opportunities with hybrid circuit breakers using a vacuum and gas breaking chamber in series are discussed.XXIII-rd Int.
