Interaction of Bumetanide and Kanamycin

Abstract

In the present study, rabbits were treated with kanamycin in combination with a new loop diuretic bumetanide at a dosage level equipotent to the diuretic action of furosemide. Severe outer hair cell damage occurred in animals following the combined administration of bumetanide and kanamycin, and the damage was approximately equal to that of animals receiving furosemide with kanamycin. This finding suggests that the enhancement of cochlear damage to animals receiving loop diuretics and aminoglycoside antibiotics is closely related to the diuretic potency of the former.
