Interaction of Coenzyme Q10 with Liposomes and its Impact on Suppression of Selenite – Induced Experimental Cataract

Abstract: Purpose: To stress the influence of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on the structural properties of liposomes as model membranes and to investigate the possible role of CoQ10 or CoQ10 doped in liposomes when topically instilled as eye drops, in preventing cataract. Methods: The molecular interaction between liposomes and Coenzyme Q10 was examined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Rat pups were randomly divided into six groups comprising 15 pups. Group (1), co… Show more

“…When submitted to DSC analysis, pure DSPC vesicles upon dehydration showed a significant major endothermic peak (T m ) at 101.5°C (Fig. 6), in accordance with [34][35][36][37]. The pretransition temperature (T p ) was around 60°C for pure DSPC liposomes.…”

“…Liposomes are highly flexible for chemical modification to fit the physiochemical properties of the drug and the microenvironment of the target. For instance, altering the head group charge using positively charged stearyl amine or negatively charged diacetyl phosphate has been shown to selectively modify the liposome-mucin and corneal permeability interaction [ 27 ]. To enhance their stability and suitability for certain applications, PAMAM-coated compound liposomes are commonly used, as the synthetic polymer coat is biocompatible and has been shown to increase the bioactivity of the drug by 1.6 times compared to normal liposomal formulations [ 25 ].…”
