Interaction of metal ions with polypyrrole on polyacrylic acid matrix

Abstract: The oxidative matrix polymerization of pyrrole (Py) by Fe(III), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) was studied and water‐soluble products along with insoluble products were obtained. The metal (Me) content of the insoluble part was determined by using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The effects of the oxidation potential of Me ions and ligands on the aggregation of polypyrrole (PPy) on the matrix polymer were measured by ultraviolet (UV)‐visible spectra. These fi… Show more

“…On the other hand, there is the secondary network as a physical cross‐link within the hydrogel (Figure S1, Supporting Information). The network polymer obtained is due to mainly the noncovalent ionic interaction of Fe 3+ ions with carboxylic groups of PAA and NH groups of PPy . In addition, the presence of plenty of OH and NH2 groups in chitosan structure forms strong inter‐ and intramolecular hydrogen bonds, therefore stabilizing the resulting hydrogel formed …”

“…It is produced as an insoluble powder, and this limits its applications in certain areas. To overcome the solubility problems of PPy, the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole (Py) in the presence of polyanions has been carried out,1–6 and PPy, obtained as a ternary complex, stayed in a colloidal form. Another way of producing soluble PPy is to use special dopants.…”

“…Neutral polymers are introduced to the polymerization media to overcome the solubility problem of PPy, which is adsorbed in the colloid form onto neutral polymers by the interaction of opposite charges of two macromolecules4 or by matrix polymerization 5–7. In the latter case, the polymerization products have low conductivities (10 −6 S/cm) because of the very low conductivity of the matrix polymer [for poly(acrylic acid), 10 −8 S/cm] 8…”
