“…For example; it is recommended that the dose of corticosteroids be doubled in some instances. 46 It is reported that prophylaxis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia with dapsone failed because of the interaction with rifampicin47 and serum levels of phenytoin, and the clinical effectiveness of warfarin and the oral contraceptive are reduced.4849 Rifampicin increases the rate of metabolism of many opiates including methadone and withdrawal symptoms may be induced. 50 In one prospective study, rifampicin, and to a lesser extent rifabutin, were shown to significantly reduce the mean serum levels of clarithromycin.51 This has raised doubts as to the effectiveness of this combination for the treatment of MAI and further studies are required.…”
