Interaction structures formed in the psychodynamic therapy of five patients with borderline personality disorder in crisis

Abstract: An effective treatment model for BPD patients in crisis needs to promote the emergence of empathically attuned interactions as well as supportive and directive interventions as dictated by the patient's individual needs. These treatments require flexibility to accommodate the patient's unique presentation in crisis. The therapeutic dyad senses which interaction structures to increase or decrease over time to reduce the patient's distress.

“…Following in the footsteps of Jones (2000), several authors addressed the topic of the therapeutic process and ISs in adult patients with a wide range of conditions (Ablon & Jones, 2005;Coombs, Coleman, & Jones, 2002;Goodman, Edwards, & Chung, 2014;Jones, 2000;Jones & Pulos, 1993). In this direction, faced with a growing need for more in-depth studies into child psychotherapy, Schneider and Jones (2004) used the PQS to develop the Child Psychotherapy Q-set (CPQ), an equivalent instrument which allows description of the therapeutic process in children (Schneider, 2004;Schneider & Jones, 2004.…”

“…Generally speaking, these revealed a limited number of factors (between 3 and 5), including both patterns which are unique to the specified dyad and patterns which are repeated in various cases (Goodman, Edwards, & Chung, 2014).…”

“…Study designs employed varied from analyses of recorded therapeutic sessions (Beeber & Caldwell ; Goodman et al . ), to in‐depth case studies and observational accounts (D'Antonio ; Hem & Pettersen ; Pettersen & Hem ), and to open‐ended interviews (structured and unstructured) and focus groups (Berggren & Gunnarsson ; Cohen ; Eriksen et al . 2012; 2013; McCann & Clark ; Pettersen & Hem ; Rugkasa et al .…”

“…Only one of the studies was based on the experiences of service users while in a contemporary inpatient setting (Goodman et al . ), and the only historical inpatient study came from the daily diaries of staff working in an Asylum between 1814 and 1840 (D'Antonio ). Where specified, the sample sizes were small in these studies ranging from two service user case studies (Hem & Pettersen ) to 48 mental health professionals in several focus groups (Rugkasa et al .…”
