Interaction techniques as a communication channel when presenting 3D visualizations

Abstract: Abstract-In this position paper we discuss the usage of various interaction technologies with focus on the presentations of 3D visualizations involving a presenter and an audience. While an interaction technique is commonly evaluated from a user perspective, we want to shift the focus from a sole analysis of the naturalness and the ease-of-use for the user, to focus on how expressive and understandable the interaction technique is when witnessed by the audience. The interaction process itself can be considered… Show more

“…Interacting with the 3D representation of medical imaging data also enhances the anatomical and procedural perception and understanding for forensic students. This highlight further the already postulated potential of (embodied) interactive systems as education tools [38,69,79,80].…”

“…As previously postulated by Sunden et al. [SBJ*14], interaction techniques can help in the dissemination of scientific discoveries using interactive installations. Also, in large‐scale immersive theaters such as planetariums, interaction becomes a central part of live programs, often with a facilitator [KHE*10, BHY18] (see Figure 9a) carrying an interactive and non‐linear narrative.…”

“…It has multiple advantages over other forms of input including an improved performance for certain tasks [43] while being compatible to mouse-based input for others [18,62], its support of interaction collaboration awareness [27], its somesthetic feedback [59], its suitability for physically large displays [71], and its use as a communication channel when one is presenting visualizations to others [70].…”
