Interactions and comprehensive effect of indoor environmental quality factors on occupant satisfaction

Abstract: In this study, eight subjects were exposed in a simulated office to 31 combinations of indoor environmental conditions, assigned by orthogonal design and uniform design. Conditions comprised variations of Predicted Mean Vote (PMV), illuminance, sound pressure and CO2 concentration (independent of a consistent ventilation rate) as indicators of thermal, lighting, acoustic and indoor air quality. Participant satisfaction with each of the four factors and with overall environmental conditions were measured with a… Show more

“…It shows an agreement with the trend of isoline which is a parabola opening downward. The average overall satisfactions predicted by using our new quantitative measure are relatively most in accordance with that obtained by Tang et al 55 As mentioned above, apart from the main effect of multiple indoor environmental factors on human perceptions, Tang considered the crossed and interaction effects of indoor environmental factors on occupant satisfaction, which is reflected in their mathematical model. These effects were also taken into consideration in our quantitation, and it was probably the reason leading to this agreement.…”

“…Nonetheless, several European countries have had to overcome the absence of specific legislation, or legislative acts already developed, due to generic definitions of the characteristics of air quality. For instance, in closed workplaces, such as closed offices where employees have individual working areas that are distinctly divided-either by walls, cubicles, or panels-it is necessary to ensure that workers have healthy air in sufficient quantity, which is also obtained with ventilation systems [10]. It is necessary for updated laws and regulations to be adopted to improve the indoor air quality.…”

“…[5,[18][19][20][21]) or combined IEQ aspects on productivity (e.g. [22][23][24][25][26][27]). The IEQ has become an interconnected, multidisciplinary, and complicated issue as the design of new buildings becomes more sophisticated with multiple office layouts, advanced sensing technologies, and with both centralized and decentralized automation systems.…”
