Local waste recycling has many benefits to environmental, economic, social, and health aspects. Arid regions, especially calcareous sandy soil, where high rates of organic matter decomposition led carbon emission to increase, are poor in their content of organic matter and some nutrients as well as high phosphorus fixation in this soil. The objectives of this study were investigating effects of bagasse pith-vinasse biochar and incubation periods on: carbon (C) sequestration, carbon mineralization, and nutrients availability of calcareous sandy soil. The incubation experiment included four treatments: (1) unamended soil (control), (2) soil amended with 3% (w/w) bagasse pith-vinasse (BPV), (3) soil amended with 3% (w/w) biochar of bagasse pithvinasse (BPVB), and (4) soil amended with 3% (w/w) BPV + BPVB (1:1) and incubated at 3, 7, 21 and 46 days. The results of this study revealed a decline in carbon emission with adding BPVB compared to BPV and BPV + BPVB this in turn leads to enhancing carbon sequestration. Available phosphorus improved significantly with adding bagasse pith-vinasse biochar compared with unamended soil. Phosphorus availability increases with increasing incubating durations for bagasse pith-vinasse biochar. At the end of the incubation, the phosphorus availability increased from 20.08 mg kg −1 soil for control to 20.36, 35.25, and 20.63 mg kg −1 soil for BPV, BPVB and BPV + BPVB, respectively. Moreover, potassium availability showed a significant improvement with BPVB application compared with unamended soil. We recommend adding biochar to low fertility soil because it plays an important role in the environmental management via improving soil fertility, local waste management, and climate change mitigation.

While biochar soil amendment has been widely proposed as a soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration strategy to mitigate detrimental climate changes in global agriculture, the SOC sequestration was still not clearly understood for the different effects of fresh and aged biochar on SOC mineralization. In the present study of a two‐factorial experiment, topsoil samples from a rice paddy were laboratory‐incubated with and without fresh or aged biochar pyrolyzed of wheat residue and with and without crop residue‐derived dissolved organic matter (CRM) for monitoring soil organic matter decomposition under controlled conditions. The six treatments included soil with no biochar, with fresh biochar and with aged biochar treated with CRM, respectively. For fresh biochar treatment, the topsoil of a same rice paddy was amended with wheat biochar directly from a pyrolysis wheat straw, the soil with aged biochar was collected from the same soil 6 years following a single amendment of same biochar. Total CO2 emission from the soil was monitored over a 64 day time span of laboratory incubation, while microbial biomass carbon and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) were determined at the end of incubation period. Without CRM, total organic carbon mineralization was significantly decreased by 38.8% with aged biochar but increased by 28.9% with fresh biochar, compared to no biochar. With CRM, however, the significantly highest net carbon mineralization occurred in the soil without biochar compared to the biochar‐amended soil. Compared to aged biochar, fresh biochar addition significantly increased the total PLFA concentration by 20.3%–33.8% and altered the microbial community structure by increasing 17:1ω8c (Gram‐negative bacteria) and i17:0 (Gram‐positive bacteria) mole percentages and by decreasing the ratio of fungi/bacteria. Furthermore, biochar amendment significantly lowered the metabolic quotient of SOC decomposition, thereby becoming greater with aged biochar than with fresh biochar. The finding here suggests that biochar amendment could improve carbon utilization efficiency by soil microbial community and SOC sequestration potential in paddy soil can be enhanced by the presence of biochar in soil over the long run.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization (conversion of carbonaceous material to carbon dioxide) plays a central role in global carbon cycle. However, the effects of SOC mineralization under different saline–alkali stress conditions are poorly understood. In order to understand the carbon mineralization processes, four paddy fields with different saline and alkali degrees were chosen as the experimental samples and the soil CO2 emission fluxes at nine different time steps of the whole simulation experiment were observed. The physical and chemical properties of soils of four field conditions were compared for the dynamic changes of CO2 flux in the progress of paddy field cultivation simulations. The results showed that the first three fields (P1, P2, and P3) were weakly alkaline soils and the last one (P4) was strongly alkaline soil. The SOC content of each plot was significantly different and there was a near-surface enrichment, which was significantly negatively correlated with the degree of alkalization. The accumulation process of the SOC mineralization during the incubation time was consistent with the first-order kinetic model. In the initial stage of mineralization, the amount of CO2 released massively, and then the release intensity decreased rapidly. The mineralization rate decreased slowly with time and finally reached a minimum at the end of the incubation period. This study indicates that the SOC mineralization process is affected by a variety of factors. The main factors influencing SOC mineralization in the saline–alkaline soils are the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), followed by enzyme activities. Salinization of the soils inhibits the rate of soil carbon cycle, which has a greater impact on the carbon sequestration than on the carbon source process. The intensity and completeness of the SOC mineralization reactions increase with increasing SOC contents and decrease with increasing ESP levels.
