Interactive Poster Survey Study of ACS Members’ Knowledge and Needs on Research Ethics

Abstract: An interactive poster exhibited at two poster sessions at the Fall 2016 American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting was used as a vehicle to learn about ACS members’ concerns and needs related to research ethics and to identify opportunities for engagement of the Society by the Committee on Ethics (ETHX) and others in terms of ethics awareness, education, and meeting programming. The poster which leveraged color-coded sticky notes engaged 92 poster session attendees representing a wide array of shareholde… Show more

“…In this study, we used this type of poster surveys at different scientific venues as a validation method, which has been shown to be an effective tool when combined with semi-structured interviews ( Hulland et al, 2018 ). Surprisingly, very few studies explore an interactive approach, despite that posters are standard tools at scientific conferences ( Diebold et al, 2017 ; Mabrouk and Schelble, 2018 ). In addition, previous attempts to motivate scientists to conduct online surveys at conferences are highly challenging (see Hoerterer et al, 2022b ).…”

“…A graduate student hoping for a publication might manipulate their data to make them appear more promising. This was a common concern cited in an interactive poster study at the 2016 American Chemical Society National Meeting . By contrast, a pharmaceutical company with profit in mind might design experiments to make their products appear better than a more honest study design would, and industrial chemistry might be focused on customer expectations and acceptance …”

“…To solicit the opinions of students, and members of the ACS (American Chemical Society), on research ethics, Mabrouk and Schelble (2018) 2022) conducted an exploratory study to determine the self-reported knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to plagiarism among postgraduate students in universities in Myanmar; their study showed that most of the 217 students who participated had moderate attitudes towards the disapproval of plagiarism. Babelghaith et al (2022) conducted a study to explore attitudes towards plagiarism, the result showed that pharmacy students at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia had overall positive attitudes towards plagiarism and agreed that plagiarised articles do not harm science.…”
