Interactive Reconstruction of Archaeological Fragments in a Collaborative Environment

Abstract: The automatic reassembling of archaeological artefacts from a collection of fragments is a crucial problem in archaeology. It is arduous and time-consuming because the available information, in the form of fragments, is limited and "noisy". Previous research to assist in reassembly of artefacts has largely focused on either pattern-recognition or augmented-visualisation based perspectives. This paper presents a computer-aided and collaborative system for the reconstruction of archaeological artefacts, using bo… Show more

“…In Kampel and Sablatnig, 2003, researchers proposed a method based on the volume of digital patching, the method of pottery fragments in accordance with the central axis of rotation by model, the volume of this model are compressed pottery body model. In Marie and Qasrawi (2005) and Lu et al (2007), researchers used fragments information to generate 3D model based on 3D geometry, and then implemented manual stitching with the graphical interface from the computer. Digital patching algorithm can be generally divided into four steps as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Additionally, the process may require years of tedious work [3]—especially in case of absent pieces—or could require laborious effort and experienced archaeologists [2,4]. Significant developments in computer technologies have improved the reconstruction procedures for fragmented archaeological objects [5–9]; a large proportion of this has relied on the fact that pots are axially symmetric. Some researchers have proposed a complete framework with which to automatically assemble pots from 3D fragments [10,11].…”
